Ghajn Tuffieha bay – Malta

One of the most beautiful beaches at Malta is Ghajn Tuffieha beach (also know as Riviera Beach) located in the North West part of Malta beside Golden Bay. Ghajn Tuffieha is less accessible, getting down to the beach requires a descend of a quite steep flight of steps (100 – 200 steps), which means you will want to retain some of your energy for the way back up.

You can reach it by bus or by car. At the top of the steps there is a parking area, but it can be quite crowded on busy days. Ghajn Tuffieha is easily accessible by bus, but watch out to get off before the last stop, otherwise you will be going to the Golden Bay. The bus stop to Ghajn Tuffieha is recognizable if you already see the sea and you are on a straight road, then you should get off, before the bus takes a sharp right turn. From the bus stop walk ahead and you will see the stairs at your left.

One downside of getting there by bus was for us, that the bus late about an hour. There was a Maltese beside us and she said, unfortunately that’s not too rare to happen, but the view of the Ghajn Tuffieha bay compensated us. We took route 223 from St. Paul’s Bay, which was only a 20 minutes trip.

Ghajn Tuffieha is a quiet beach with red sand, clean clear water and usually a lot of people, but still enough space to get relaxed on the beach. Like on Malta’s beaches there is also no shade to hide, but you can rent sun umbrellas and sun beds if you would like.

If you feel enough strength in you, then you should take a walk up to the hills. I can’t say it will be easy, there are no routes, but the view is magical. Behind the left hill there is another bay where in most times you won’t see any people, but sometimes there are a few nudist. Be aware that nudism is illegal on Malta.
On the top of the hill you will get a wonderful view of the sea and the bays.

Restaurants and the other rooms

At the foot of the stairs, turn right and you will see the restaurant (which is more like a drink bar). At the restaurant  there are wide variety of foods, drinks and cocktails, probably you will find something you like. You can choose pizzas, burgers, lite bites, mains, fish and seafood, quesadillas, paninis, salads to eat and the popular cocktails also can be found there.

Public toilets are not available, but the restaurant toilet facilities can be used.

We can say, that Ghajn Tuffieha beach is well-equipped to stay there for a whole day.

Water sport activities

You can choose between multiple water sport activities, like banana rides, crazy sofa, self drive boats, wake boarding, water skiing and you can also book private boat trips to Popeye village and Blue Lagoon or around the coast and into the caves.

To do one of these activities ask at the bar and they will be there in about 15 minutes. So they are not at the Ghajn Tuffieha beach, but they are nearby.

There are lifeguards on the beach.
